The job of the Fed and other central banks is going to be somewhat difficult. As they reduce the balance sheet, the central banks have to make sure that the decline in the monetary base is being offset by an increase in the banks’ money and credit multipliers. If that is the case, the transition to normalcy will be a smooth one. However, to the extent that the central bank tries to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past, it will insure that the multiplier created credit is not an excessive amount.
